Gape Varietes from Mallorca

Girķ Ros

Native variety of Mallorca. Of unknown origin and existing since ancient times. Medium cluster and medium grapes with medium thick skin. Loose cluster (not compact). Average production, although after normal production the following year it usually produces a little less, returning to normal production the following year and so on. Normal management in the vineyard. Somewhat sensitive to powdery mildew. It can produce a lot of sugar, reaching very high levels (14.5, 15 or more), becoming raisined. The skin is light yellow at the beginning of ripening and as it progresses the skin turns dark yellow and turns brown at higher ripening levels. Part of the name of Giró Ros comes from this characteristic, “ros” means “blond/blonde” in Mallorcan. Variety quite widespread throughout the island.

Very complex variety, with aromas of honey, quince, peach, flowers, tea, dried flowers, orange peel, lemon peel, grapefruit, lemon verbena, white pepper, giving creamy, intense, long and complex wines, but depending on the time of harvest and production they can be fresher. Very versatile variety that can produce everything from fresh to liqueur wines.

Although a decade ago wines made 100% with Giró Ros were rare, today they are more common.
