Native variety of Mallorca. Also called Gorgollassa. According to the latest DNA study, it may be a cross between the Monastrell and Hebén varieties, although these studies must be taken with caution. Existing on the island since ancient times. Medium cluster and medium grapes with medium thick skin. Loose cluster (not compact). Not very productive. Easy to handle in the vineyard. It is not especially sensitive to diseases, pests or drought, but it is sensitive to flower loss and fertility. It does not produce much sugar, reaching 11.5 or 12 potential alcohol in normal years. It reaches a maximum of 12.5 or a little more in very hot years, also depending on the soil and management of the vineyard. It is very little extended, there being only a few hectares of this variety.
Variety of great aromatic complexity with aromas of strawberry tree, sloes, rose hips, mushrooms, leather, smoked, myrtle, charcoal, juniper, mountain herbs, pink pepper, violets, giving elegant, long, intense, fresh and complex wines.
It was the most cultivated red variety before phylloxera in the area of ??the island that we call “Es Raiger”, in the plain (Es Pla) at the foot of the mountains and where at that time several wines made with Gargollassa won prizes in international competitions. After phylloxera, this variety gradually disappeared until it was considered extinct, but three plants were found in a vineyard and thanks to these three plants the variety could be recovered.
Wines made with Gargollassa are rare and even more so are those made 100% with this variety.
